  •  Lonely Planet PeruGood basic guidebook
  • Insight Guide PeruAnother good guidebook.
  • The Machu Picchu Guidebook: A Self-Guided Tour  by Ruth M. Wright, Alfredo Valencia Zegarra, Alfredo Valencia Zegarra. Wonderful details in this fairly new and quite thorough guide to what to us is the most fascinating site in the world. This revised edition includes newly discovered sites. New photos and maps with full-color illustrations of real life scenes from National Geographic Magazine.
  • The Secret of the Incas by William Sullivan. A lot of background and insight on the myths of the Andes is contained in this discussion that ties them to the astronomy of the Inca times. In hardback and quality paperback.
  • Journey to Machu Picchu: (Order directly from author) My favorite read about Peru. Spiritual Wisdom from the Andes (formerly Pachamama's Children : Mother Earth and Her Children of the Andes in Peru) by Carol Cumes & Romulo Lizarraga Valencia. A warm look at the mystical tales that abound among the people of the Andes, some based in history, others more modern. A must for anyone wanting to understand life in the Sacred Valley. One of Mary's favorites. (Check out Willka T'ika web site, www.travelperu.com)
  • Footprints Cusco and Inca Trail Handbook by Peter Frost An update on an earlier book by Frost. A favorite with locals. Even the update may be a bit outdated.
  • Secret of the Andes by Ann Nolan Clark, Jean Charlot. A charming tale of a young llama herder who learns the special and mystical history of his people. Written for children, but fun for adults. Under $5 from Barnes and Noble.
  • INITIATION: A Woman's Spiritual Adventure in the Heart of the Andes by Elizabeth Jenkins. (Putnam, 1997). If you're interested in the mystical side of the Sacred Valley, esp. the apus (mountain spirits), read this somewhat naive at times account of spiritual exploration in Peru. It gets better half-way through and is easy to read.
  • The Wisdom of the Ancient One: An Inca Initiation and In Search of the Wise One: A Sacred Journey by Anton Ponce de Paiva. Another approach to ancient Andean spirituality, written by a second (or more) generation member of an Inca tradition. Hard to find, by Bluestar Communications, 1-800-6-BLUESTAR.
  • Secret of the Andes by Brother Philip. A book telling of a hidden monastery in the Andes where ancient truths from a highly evolved cultures are being kept until mankind is ready for them. A bit far-out, but it gives an understanding of the Brotherhood of the Seven Rays often referred to in metaphysical writing about Peru. You should be able to get it from your New Age book store.
